Located in Mehrauli - the historic neighbourhood of Delhi, the Mughal Period Jharna is a prominent water structure dating back to 1700 AD. Built by Nawab Ghaziuddin, it was designed to be a pleasure garden and a retreat for the Mughals.
The Jharna, which means a waterfall, received the extra runoff from the Hauz--Shamsi (vast Slave dynasty tank) through an underground pipe, which is stil visible today. Built in three parts, its complete structure consisted of a reservoir, a waterfall and a slew of fountains.
Known to host the famous 'Phool Walon ki Sair' (Procession of Florists) since the Mughal era, the Jharna is also used as a venue for other events like the Basant Utsav (Spring Festival) and the Monsoon Festival.
