The Indian Independence Day commemorates the country's birth as a free nation. On this day, in the year 1947, the British Parliament transferred the legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly after passing the Indian Independence Act 1947
Though all state capitals commemorate the day through various activities, celebrations in Delhi hold a special place in the hearts of Indians. As the capital prepares itself for the grand Independence Day celebrations, the whole city seems to get a makeover, While the landmark structures are beautified with lights and decorations, the important roads of the city are cleaned and painted. People deck their balconies with small national flags and schools across the capital prepare and organise special functions.
The celebrations at the Red Fort, where India's independence was first announced in 1947, are something to experience at least once in a lifetime. The Independence Day festival commences with the Guard of Honour conducted by the Prime Minister of India, who then hoists the national flag and conducts the 'Address to the Nation'. Following this, the Independence Day fair starts, which is the main attraction of the celebration. With the grand march-past of the Armed Forces, kite flying battles, performances by the National Cadet Corp students and exhibitions by diverse Indian states, the events of this fair leave one in awe,
